We have been working for a while now on putting together volunteer opportunities with local charities to develop New England’s self-sufficiency. Our first planned trip in this initiative is to Gaining Ground, a farm in Concord, MA.

Gaining Ground is a nonprofit, volunteer-based organization and all the produce they grow gets donated to food banks around New England. They produced and donated 127,000 pounds in 2020, which went to fifteen local hunger relief organizations. This first trip will entail 5-20 people from the NEIC going to the farm to volunteer with tasks for two hours.

They can and do accommodate many different levels of physical capability. I have been to the farm before and am disabled due to knee issues and was offered choices in what I felt I could manage. Volunteers and members alike, if you have been wanting an opportunity to help your fellow New Englanders, this is your chance.
